Job sought God
“The Hedge of Job”
(Job 1:5, 10)
Job sought God for intimacy, fellowship, and sanctification for his family through prayer. Job walked in a spirit of prayer through repentance. This did four things:
1. It attracted God’s presence to Job’s prayers,
2. It caused God to brag on Job to Satan,
3. It put a hedge around Job and all his substance,
4. It brought favor to Job’s life,
. . . because he walked in the spirit of prayer and repentance continually. Repentance is not like a spare tire to be used only when you need it. It releases the grace of God into the earthly, material realm for humanity by the voice of the intercessor. Without it, Ezekiel says God brings wrath (judgment) when he does not find an intercessor who will stand in the gap for a people through repentant praying. Our right standing with God is only as good as the last time we repented. Repentance activates the mercies and judgment of God upon a people. We see this with many Bible figures such as Daniel, Moses, and Jonah.
The priest carried blood throughout the tabernacle as a sign that repentance must go with us throughout our entire time of praying to attract God’s nature. The Mosaic law required they sprinkle the blood on their garments when they walked throughout the temple. This represents the spirit of repentance. This releases God’s mercy for a situation. This caused the glory cloud to come down in the most holy place. All because God saw the blood and fire carried from the brazen altar of repentance. For he will not despise a broken, contrite heart. God is attracted to the spirit of repentance.
Uziah forgot this and was struck with leprosy. He felt his track record excluded him from this kind of humility. The Bible says judgment begins at the house of the Lord. In part, God can send His Spirit into our communities. If the pulpit does not preach repentance, then our communities have no hope. For the Spirit and the bride say, come, Lord Jesus! This is the cry of the spirit of repentance through the spirit of prayer. Job knew this and sanctified his family every day. It brought a hedge on his substance.
Jesus said repentance must be taught in my name in the four corners of the earth, according to Luke 24:47. For the spirit of prayer through repentance is a way of life and not something just for new converts. So Job knew this and created nightmares for the Devil. All of Hell’s powers could not get to Job because he walked in the spirit of prayer through repentance! Job’s attitude of repentance kept evil out of his household. Proverbs 19:32 says the man who fears the Lord shall not be visited with evil. For he shall be satisfied and he will tend to life. Jesus healed people after he told them, “Your sins are forgiven.”
