Our Heavenly Father
“Interaction with Our Heavenly Father” from Bishop John W. Hanson.
Prayer should be a lively, energetic conversation with our Maker. It should be moving, intense, and vigorous. It should be a continuously changing interaction with our heavenly Father that varies in intensity and purpose; an adventure. Prayer should be our daily staff meeting with the God who has promised to order our steps, provide for our daily needs, and make a path for us in the wilderness.
Think of your prayer life as an adventure. If prayer is an adventure, then each time of prayer might be considered to be one leg of the journey. As in any journey, we should expect to encounter a variety of landscapes. For example, in traversing a continent, one might cross rivers, endure vast deserts, wind through mountains, and navigate congested interstates. Even a short road trip might entail changing roads, changing a tire, changing speeds, and changing routes. These changes may be dictated because of accidents or detours, or they may simply be the result of a hunch or a preference. So with each expedition we make into prayer; the prayer warrior will often set out to pray not knowing what to expect or what kind of prayer tools he or she will employ, but ultimately something will be accomplished as a result of the journey.
As with any relationship, communication is key. Prayer is our chance to express our thoughts and feelings to God and to connect with Him in such a way that He can inspire us to pray prayers that will powerfully impact our world. These encounters with God cannot be mapped out in a prayer book. They will be dynamic and powerful conversations that meander through many different passageways of prayer as God leads us to places of His choosing.
