The Storm and Praying
“Praying in the Storm”
By Debbie Sanders
It was a beautiful night for sailing. The plan was just to go across the lake to the other side. They had no inclination of the approaching storm, but suddenly the disciples found themselves in a deluge of wind and waves. The wind angrily churned the deep waters, causing the waves to cover the boat, eventually filling it.
The disciples rushed to where Jesus lay sleeping, and in fear they awoke Him saying, “Master, we perish.”
Jesus steps forward, rebukes the wind and the waves, and a calm falls once again across the lake.
How interesting that the disciples did not lavish on Jesus a prayer that was wordy and eloquent. There was no time for a flowery invocation that would have impressed the Pharisees, had they been there. Instead, it was a simple, yet desperate cry for help that awoke the Master and caused the miraculous to take place, “Master, we perish.”
Does Jesus hear me in the midst of the storm, when the winds are howling and the waves seem insurmountable? I will confess that sometimes it has felt like Jesus was “asleep in my boat,” and that I indeed was destined to be crushed by an angry storm that had descended upon me.
He made darkness his secret place; his pavilion round about him were dark waters and thick clouds of the skies. Psalms 18:11
What seems meant for my destruction, is actually where I find God, for in those stormy places, where dark waters and thick clouds hinder my view, I discover His secret place. A place where God will show me things that otherwise I would not be privileged to see or experience. A place where my faith will grow and take wings as I am forced to lean into Him, taking shelter from the storm.
The name of the Lord is a strong tower: the righteous run into it, and is safe.
Pro. 18:10
Moses knew that hidden place in God, as Ex 20:21 tells us he drew near to the thick darkness where God was.
God, help me to exercise faith as the disciples did when they first asked, “Where is Jesus?” I want You be the first place I look to when fear overwhelms me and thick, dark clouds encircle me.
Thank you, God, that above the howling winds, you always hear our heartfelt prayers for help, and You come running to comfort, to calm, and to perform the miraculous.
